European Society of Human Genetics urges caution over use of new genetic sequencing techniques
Public release date: 16-May-2013 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Mary Rice mary.rice@riceconseil.eu European Society of Human Genetics The use of genome-wide analysis (GWA), where the entirety of an individual’s DNA is examined to look for the genomic mutations or variants which can cause health problems is a massively useful technology for diagnosing disease. However, it can also pose major ethical problems if used incorrectly, say new recommendations from the European Society of Human Genetics (ESHG) published on line today (16 May 2013) in the European Journal of Human Genetics Continue reading

Penn Medicine researchers identify 4 new genetic risk factors for testicular cancer
Public release date: 12-May-2013 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Steve Graff stephen.graff@uphs.upenn.edu 215-349-5653 University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine PHILADELPHIAA new study looking at the genomes of more than 13,000 men identified four new genetic variants associated with an increased risk of testicular cancer, the most commonly diagnosed type in young men today. The findings from this first-of-its-kind meta-analysis were reported online May 12 in Nature Genetics by researchers at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. The discovery of these genetic variationschromosomal “typos,” so to speakcould ultimately help researchers better understand which men are at high risk and allow for early detection or prevention of the disease. Prenatal DNA Sequencing
Earlier this year Illumina, the maker of the worlds most widely used DNA sequencing machines, agreed to pay nearly half a billion dollars for Verinata, a startup in Redwood City, California, that has hardly any revenues. What Verinata does have is technology that can do something as ethically fraught as it is inevitable: sequence the DNA of a human fetus before birth. Continue reading

Public supports gene therapy on IVF embryos
Topics: babies, dna, ivf THE possibility that babies could be born with the DNA of three different people is a step closer, after a consultation showed that most Britons would be happy to see the law changed to allow a radical form of gene therapy. The IVF therapy would help women in danger of passing on mitochondrial disease to their babies – a potentially fatal metabolic disorder. An exhaustive survey of public attitudes to the replacement of an affected mother’s mitochondria – the tiny “power packs” of cells – with those from an egg donor has found widespread support for the technique Continue reading

The Genetics Behind Age-related Macular Degeneration Detailed In New Study
March 4, 2013 redOrbit Staff & Wire Reports Your Universe Online A coalition of 18 different research organizations has identified seven new genetic regions associated with an eye disorder that is a common cause of blindness in older individuals, according to a study published online Sunday in the journal Nature Genetics. The AMD Gene Consortium study also confirmed that 12 regions of the human genome (also known as loci) previously identified by scientists were also associated with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) Continue reading

C2CAM : 200000 Year Old Annunaki Cities Discovered in Africa – Video
C2CAM : 200000 Year Old Annunaki Cities Discovered in Africa Publisher and producer Michael Tellinger discussed his study of ancient ruins at the southern tip of Africa, which he believes were associated with a vanished civilization that ET visitors, the Annunaki, brought together over 200000 years ago, when they came here to mine gold. The ruins, which he's investigated along with Johan Heine, consist of thousands of stone structures over a large area. Continue reading
